The color of the 14k white gold metal is achieved with a black rhodium plating, which is a surface treatment that can wear off in time revealing the underlying metal. If the ring is worn daily the plating will wear off fairly quickly, revealing the white gold but with a nice patina. The deeper and more textured areas will remain darker.
